Cold room vs deep freezer: which one do you actually need?

    In short.

A cold room holds chilled produce above zero: +2°C to +8°C for dairy, 0°C to +4°C for fruits and vegetables, +14°C to +20°C for ripening. A freezer room holds –18°C to –25°C for meat, fish, ice cream, IQF and frozen food, with more insulation and refrigeration TR. Fresh produce needs a cold room; frozen or long-haul stock needs a freezer.

Cold room and deep freezer are often used interchangeably, but they solve different problems. The wrong choice means either spoiled produce or wasted energy. Here is a practical decision framework.

    Cold room (above-zero)

Designed for chilled storage: +2°C to +8°C for dairy, +0°C to +4°C for cold storage of fruits & vegetables, +14°C to +20°C for ripening chambers.

    Deep freezer / freezer room

Designed for frozen storage: –18°C to –25°C for meat, fish, ice cream, IQF and frozen processed food. Higher insulation, more refrigeration TR, lower humidity.

    Decision matrix

Pick by produce: fresh produce → cold room; frozen/IQF/long-haul → freezer; mixed operation → multi-chamber design with separate refrigeration circuits.

    Questions

    Frequently asked.

Short answers from the engineering team. Ask us anything the article does not cover.

Can a cold room be later converted to a freezer?

Partially — refrigeration can be upgraded but insulation thickness usually cannot. Always size PUF thickness for the lowest target temperature you plan to operate at.
