PUF vs PIR insulation: density, thickness & cost guide

    In short.

PUF is the most common cold-room insulation in India, with thermal conductivity of about 0.022 W/m·K at a density of 40 ±2 kg/m³. PIR is PUF chemistry with better fire performance and typically costs 10–20% more. PUF suits the vast majority of agri cold rooms; PIR is specified for pharma, public-access stores and projects whose fire compliance or insurance demands it.

PUF and PIR look identical on a panel cut-section, but their thermal and fire performance differ. Choosing the right insulation material has direct cost, safety and energy implications.

    PUF (Polyurethane Foam)

Most common insulation for cold rooms in India. Thermal conductivity ~0.022 W/m·K, density 40 ±2 kg/m³ for cold storage applications.

    PIR (Polyisocyanurate)

PUF chemistry with improved fire performance — better char layer, higher LOI. Slightly better thermal at higher temperatures. Cost is typically 10–20% higher.

    When to specify PIR

Pharma, public-access cold stores, projects with stricter fire compliance and where insurance terms demand better fire rating.

    Questions

    Frequently asked.

Short answers from the engineering team. Ask us anything the article does not cover.

Is PIR mandatory for cold rooms?

No. PUF is acceptable for the vast majority of agri cold-room applications. PIR is preferred when fire performance is a primary specification driver.
