Choosing PUF panel thickness for cold rooms in India

    In short.

Size PUF thickness for the lowest temperature the room will run at: 60 mm for partitions and AC rooms, 80–100 mm for chillers (+2 to +8°C), 100–125 mm for cold storage at 0°C, 125–150 mm for freezer rooms (–18 to –25°C) and 150 mm+ for blast freezers. Hot, high-radiation sites warrant the higher end of each band; hill and north-east sites can use the lower end.

PUF panel thickness is a small spec line in a BOQ but a big lever on long-term refrigeration running cost. Under-spec it and you pay forever in electricity. Over-spec it and you waste capex.

    Thickness vs temperature band

Indicative thickness ranges used in Indian projects.

    • Partitions / AC rooms: 60 mm
    • Chillers (+2 to +8°C): 80–100 mm
    • Cold storage (0°C): 100–125 mm
    • Ripening chambers: 100 mm
    • Freezer rooms (–18 to –25°C): 125–150 mm
    • Blast freezers: 150 mm+

    Ambient & site adjustments

Hot, high-radiation sites (Rajasthan, Gujarat, Vidarbha summers) warrant the higher end of each band. Hill / north-east sites can use the lower end.

    Questions

    Frequently asked.

Short answers from the engineering team. Ask us anything the article does not cover.

Why does thicker PUF reduce running cost?

Thicker insulation reduces transmission heat load, so the refrigeration system runs fewer hours per day to maintain temperature — directly lowering electricity bills over the project life.
